Six ’25 Graduates Earn Fulbright Awards

Six members of the Wabash College Class of 2025 have accepted Fulbright awards to locations in Europe and South America.

Five students earned Fulbright Teaching Assistantships (ETA) and will be based in Europe—Connor Craig (Spain), Jacob Davis (Germany), Andrew Dever (Spain), Neal Laymon (Andorra), and Logan 亚洲通ilbaker (Czech Republic)—while Mawuli Nevis earned a Fulbright open study/research award to Perú.

During this year’s Fulbright selection process, Wabash had nine semifinalists, the most in school history, out of an initial pool of 12 applicants.

Connor CraigA biology major with minors in Spanish and chemistry, Craig is a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he was an executive board member for three years, served as vice president of the Sphinx Club, and was a four-year letterman for the Little Giant swimming and diving team. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and previously studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain, in the summer of 2024.

“My heart is full of gratitude for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this,” said Craig, a native of South Bend, Indiana. “This Fulbright experience will give me a uniquely tailored skillset and background to make a difference in the world and affect people’s lives for the better. I don’t know what will come of an adventure like this, but I do know that my future will be more exciting and fruitful because of it.”

Craig will be based in La Rioja, Spain, during his fellowship.

An economics and German double major, Davis is a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and the German Club. He Jacob Davisparticipated in an immersion experience to Heidelberg with his German 202 class in the spring of 2024 and is a two-time Dean’s List honoree.

“I have a deep sense of appreciation for the Fulbright and the wide range of opportunities it opens for me in the future,” said Davis, a native of Washington, Indiana. “I come from a family of educators and have always believed in the transformative power of education. I look forward to the process of learning from another perspective, which was a large motivator for me to pursue this fellowship.”

Davis will be based in the German state of Nordrhein-亚洲通stfalen during his fellowship.

Andrew DeverA Spanish and history double major with a minor in Classics, Dever is a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity, where he served as philanthropy chair, was president of the Pre-Law Society, a Moot Court finalist, a senior fellow with the Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse initiative, and served as a delegate to the Athens Democracy Forum. Further, he was a member of the Wabash soccer team, the Stephenson Institute, and was treasurer of the Wabash Acts Responsibly Council.

He has traveled or studied abroad previously in Athens, Greece; Limerick, Ireland; Valencia, Spain; Thessaloniki, Greece; and Prague, Czech Republic.

“Earning a Fulbright is a tremendous honor, and I am grateful to have received this recognition,” said Dever, a native of Dallas, Texas. “Earning a Fulbright allows me to help children in Spain learn English. As I have observed with Spanish, speaking a second language is a valuable tool for mobility and a means of connection. Having spent many years growing with my language skills, I will be able to guide others in their learning journey.”

Dever will be based in Galicia, Spain, during his fellowship.

A French and history double major with minors in Spanish and chemistry, Laymon is a member of Kappa Sigma Neal Laymonfraternity, the Sphinx Club, and the indoor soccer club. He also earned distinction on his senior comprehensive exams in French.

Previously, he’s taken Wabash immersion experiences to Paris, Prague, and Nairobi, Kenya, and studied abroad in Strasbourg, France.

“The Fulbright is a unique opportunity to teach students and live in one of the most isolated regions in the world,” said Laymon, a native of Logansport, Indiana. “With a population of 80,000 and a land area roughly the size of Rhode Island, Andorra is a place unlike anything I have ever experienced. Living and working there is a challenge I am excited to pursue.”

Laymon also earned but declined a Teaching Assistant Program in France award, which offers the opportunity to work in France for seven months, teaching English to French students of all ages.

Mawuli NevisA biology major with minors in chemistry and Spanish, Nevis is a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Pre-Health Organization, the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies, and was a four-year letterman for the Little Giant wrestling team. He has served for three years as a member of the LOCKR Lab research team at Wabash College, where he conducted molecular genetics research in a National Science Foundation-funded lab.

Nevis was named the 2025 Arthur Ashe Jr. Wrestling Sports Scholar of the Year by Diverse Issues in 亚洲通er Education magazine.

He’s taken an immersion experience to Perú with the Wabash Global Health Initiative and studied abroad in Perú, Argentina, and Chile.

“It means so much to have earned this award,” said Nevis, a native of Cincinnati. “This is the perfect opportunity because it allows me to do research and travel. Earning the Fulbright will aid in my medical school application, and it also allows me to build on relationships I have started in Perú.”

Nevis will be based in Lima, Perú, during his fellowship.

A Classics and theater double major, 亚洲通ilbaker has served on The Bachelor, the independent student newspaper, Logan 亚洲通ilbakerwhere he was managing editor for the last two years, was a consultant in the Wabash Writing Center, a member of the Glee Club, and has been a standout performer and director for the theater department since his arrival on campus. He was selected as one of two Commencement speakers to represent the Class of 2025.

Previously, he traveled abroad to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania with the Glee Club; to Athens, Greece, as a writing consultant; and to Naples, Italy, and Prague, Czech Republic, as part of immersion experiences.

“Ever since I took an immersion trip to Prague my sophomore year, I wanted to go back to the Czech Republic in some regard,” said 亚洲通ilbaker, a native of Scottsburg, Indiana. “亚洲通 need people promoting the exchange of diverse views between cultures, and I am proud to represent my country and connect with the people of my host country. Whatever comes afterward, I know it will help prepare me to join the long list of successful Fulbrighters.”

“Given the record number of Fulbright applications nationwide this year, I was thrilled when nine of our applicants were named semifinalists in January,” said Susan Albrecht, Wabash College Fellowship Advisor. That six semifinalists ultimately received awards is testament to their talent and drive, as well as an enthusiasm for the Fulbright program. Each of these gentlemen put in long hours contemplating, drafting, and revising their proposals and this outcome offers clear evidence that Wabash men compete very favorably on a national stage.”
